A brave female tourist thwarted a local thug who allegedly tried to rape her while she was hiking through a forest in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.

The woman, 26, told police she had rented a motorbike to go on a DIY tour across the rural province when she noticed the stranger on her way to the Erawan Waterfalls on May 31.

The male allegedly approached her while using a translation app claiming to know a shortcut to her destination, before leading her to a patch of woods away from the highway.

Suspicious of the man's motives, Evilija took out her phone and recorded him, but still followed as they trekked through a path surrounded by bamboo trees.

When they reached a secluded part of the forest, the alleged attacker turned and pounced on the tourist.

Evilija told police managed to shake off the man and sprinted back to the road to inform authorities of the incident. She filed a complaint on June 1, showing officers and tourist police her injuries and leading them to the scene of the alleged attack.

Cops used the video and pictures she had taken and were able to identify the suspect as Pramote Khongkham, 23, before he was detained on June 1 and confessed to the alleged sexual assault.

He now faces charges of 'intentionally committing an indecent act with violence'.

Expressing remorse for his actions, Pramote said: 'I must admit that I have made a mistake. My actions were impulsive, and I regretfully admit that I pulled her arm, though I did not intend to harm her.

'I apologize to the victim and the Thai people for tarnishing their reputation. I am bad, and only I am at fault. The people of Thailand are unlike me, and I apologise for the damage caused to their reputation.'

Police Lieutenant Colonel Kittipan Senabut and Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Pakornkit Chinteset said that Pramote had been working at the government's Erawan National Park department.

The park management said he has been dismissed and they will fully cooperate with police throughout the investigation.

Police said that during the investigation, Pramote cooperated with the authorities and led them to his residence, where they recovered and confiscated the clothes he had worn during the assault, including a grey t-shirt, a black t-shirt, shorts, and black sandals.

Providing his account of the incident, Pramote claimed that he initially noticed the victim while riding past her and honked his horn.

He said Evilija began following him, despite him telling her to leave. Growing increasingly frustrated, Pramote alleged that the victim persisted in tailing him until they reached a parking lot. It was there that he decided to chase her away, but his intentions were apparently lost in translation.

According to Pramote's statement, he and the victim entered a nearby forest and walked for around 500 metres before he made an attempt to rape her.

However, the victim's resistance and determination caused Pramote to stop his assault and instead guide her out of the forest.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Kittipan Senabut said: 'Officers assisted the victim immediately when the complaint was filed. She had physical evidence of being attacked.

'The suspect was identified and arrested. He confessed to the attack and will be sent to court where his sentence will be decided.'
