A loud sonic boom was heard across Washington DC, US, after fighter scrambled to respond to an unresponsive small plane that violated the airspace.

The Cessna carrying four people including one pilot later crashed over mountainous terrain in southwest Virginia. The plane had taken off from Elizabethton, Tennessee, and was bound for Long Island’s MacArthur Airport but headed back toward the D.C. area after reaching Long Island, according to reports.

No survivors were found at the crash site.
