Disappointed hikers arrived at a Mount Everest base camp - only to find it filled with trash.

Tenzi Sherpa, who has been trekking since 2019, said it was the dirtiest camp he has ever seen in his career in Nepal.

Footage shows brightly-coloured tents - most of which were from big international brands like The North Face - left undone by previous mountaineers in Nepal on May 17.

Piles of trash including empty oxygen bottles, steel bowls, spoons, paper, and discarded helmets and jackets also covered the icy hard ground.

The local mountaineer said he had seen several times how touring companies would cut their logos from the tents and gear that they use before leaving them in the mountain.

He said: ‘It was the dirtiest camp I have ever seen. There were lots of tents, empty oxygen bottles, steel bowls, spoons, sanitation pads, and paper. These were all used by humans.

‘This was done by some of us who went to climb the Everest. I feel so sad every time because I have seen so many times before how expedition groups and companies would cut their logos and leave their tents there.'

Tenzi noted that there was an effort through a Clean Mountain campaign initiative to ensure that hikers would leave nothing but footprints, but despite their information drive, there would still be trash left on the camp.

He said: ‘I would like to request the government to punish companies who leave their trash on the mountain. It's a huge problem we are all facing.'

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world but it is also one of the most polluted. Experts say that it is because it is very difficult to carry trash down the mountain. Another reason for the trash problem is that there is no effective way to dispose of it either through burning or burying the rubbish.
