Thieves leave historic church in sticky situation after stealing £100 worth of jam, jeopardising its future upkeep

One of England's most isolated churches is facing a setback after thieves stole over £100 of jam.

The 900-year-old St Thomas the Apostle Church Harty on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent has been left in a sticky situation as money raised from the jam and other items helps maintain the building.

Around 25 jars of jam and 30 pens were stolen valued at £165, but the thieves left a few jars of marmalade.

The unmanned church relies on visitors' honesty to put money into collection boxes when purchasing items.

Sue Hopper, who has worked at the church for 30 years, told Kent Online: "We sell jam and pens at the church in order to raise funds to look after the building.

"On a day between Friday, May 19, to Saturday, May 27, around 25 jars of jam and 30 pens were stolen, about £165 worth of products.

“I can’t do anything about it as there is no hard evidence. All I know is that when I came to do a wedding blessing on May 27 the table was just bare.

"The church is open every day from dawn til dusk and as we have so many visitors it is impossible to keep track of everyone."

Hopper also mentioned in 2020 the church was left covered in jam by vandals.

Footage shows the church on June 7, 2023.
