Major roads closed as Cumbria, UK, floods
Many major roads in Cumbria were closed today as flood water from heavy overnight rain ran off the fells. The A592, A591, A593 and the A66 were closed for all or part of the day today.
The Met Office prediction of over 200mm of rain on Cumbria proved to be on the high side, with around 150mm falling in 12 hours. The rivers in Central Lakes rose by about 2 Metres in response, short of the 2009 floods. Some properties were flooded, but mostly the impact was to disrupt travel around the county.
The river levels are recovering fast as the water finds its way out to the coast and into the sea.
