STORYLINE:
Chinese medical staff have provided free medical services to about 150 residents in North Tarawa of the Pacific island country of Kiribati.
The second Chinese medical team stationed in Kiribati visited two locations in North Tarawa on Friday. It first arrived in Buariki, a village located at the northern tip of North Tarawa, where the prevalence of asthma, diabetes, rheumatic heart disease, stroke, and skin infections is high.
After donating desperately needed medical supplies, such as oral antibiotics, antifungal cream, and blood pressure monitors, to local clinics, Chinese doctors and nurses provided free medical services to villagers, including disease diagnosis and treatment.
The services included blood pressure measurement, blood sugar test, electrocardiogram, wound treatment, cardiac auscultation, as well as medicine use consultation.
Besides, the Chinese medical professionals offered guidance on lifestyle changes for those who were troubled by hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases, while also providing medical advice and distributing medicines.
In the afternoon, the Chinese medical team visited and worked at a health center in Abaokoro.
Team head Cao Lijun said that during the mission on Friday, the Chinese medical team also identified cases needed to be transferred for further treatment, and helped raise local residents' awareness about safeguarding health to prevent complications in the later development of some diseases.
Cao added that his team will provide more free health services to benefit the people in Kiribati, contributing to people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
