STORYLINE:
An exhibition on Chinese shadow puppetry opened on Saturday in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province, presenting how digital technology breathes new life into the ancient folk art.
With a history of over 2,000 years, the Chinese shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2011.
With the help of digital technology, the traditional art is now able to present itself to more audiences in more diversified and enchanting forms.
Digital recording equipment such as full-frame camera and HD digital camcorder is increasingly used to document and record the folk art for better protection and inheritance.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): HU BAI, Deputy director of Liaoning Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center
"We invited them (intangible cultural heritage inheritors) to perform shadow puppet shows for visitors. A collection of cultural relics is also on display at the exhibition. We hope for bringing visitors a visual and auditory feast."
Shadow puppetry is a Chinese folk art known for its unique storytelling techniques via figures made from cowhide and an illuminated backdrop that creates the illusion of moving images.
