STORYLINE:

Scholars attending a seminar on experiences of poverty alleviation in China have spoken highly of the country's development achievements, believing that China has provided precious experience for other developing countries.

The event, jointly organized by the Center for International Policy-Africa and the China-Africa Institute, was held Saturday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): HUMPHREY MOSHI, Professor at University of Dar es Salaam
"Definitely, learning from the Chinese experience and adapting them to our own circumstances will be the most important vehicle for ensuring that Africa in the next few decades is going to reduce poverty. So this lecture as I said was very enriching and we are going to borrow a leaf definitely to see how we can move forward."

The attendees also talked about implications of China's experience for China-Tanzania cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DENG YANTING, Deputy Director of Division of Security Studies, China-Africa Institute
"In our Chinese traditional saying, there is a very popular saying that if you want to be rich, you have to build roads and bridges. I think the notion of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) perfectly corresponds to this notion with improved infrastructure capabilities. It will be easier to get integrated into the intact world market, like the 5th phase of the standard gauge railway and Nyerere hydropower plant and Karume international airport in Zanzibar. These are all very typical points to share with China-Tanzania cooperation on infrastructure. As from my point of view, opportunities provided by the China-Tanzania cooperation and the BRI are also great opportunities with China to share its experiences and public good as the world's second-largest economy as well as the world's largest developing country."
