Police seized 32kg of heroin worth more than six million USD at a port in Thailand last Friday.

Officers from the Customs Department of Thailand intercepted the huge shipment of opiates on June 9 following x-ray scans of 'high-risk' suspicious containers at the Bangkok Port.

A physical inspection of the boxes revealed the heroin hidden inside. The drugs were concealed in small sachets declared as pain-relief patches destined for the lucrative market in Melbourne, Australia.

In a June 10 press conference, Phantong Loykulnanta, deputy director-general of the Customs Department said: 'The confiscated drugs would have fetched a high price in the Australian market - more than 200 million baht (5.8 million USD).

'The Bangkok Port Customs Office has successfully seized a total of five drug shipments since the beginning of last year. The amount seized so far is two billion baht.

'The office remains dedicated to its mission of intercepting illicit drugs to safeguard society and protect the country.'

The Customs Department said it will collaborate with the Narcotics Control Board and the Narcotics Suppression Bureau to conduct a comprehensive probe into the drug shipment to Australia.

It is not known where the heroin originated from but Thailand is known for its heroin production in the 'Golden Triangle' - a remote area of land some 367,000 square miles in size that borders Laos and Myanmar.

The trade often encompasses multinational criminals from China, with wealthy Australia, Japan, Taiwan and Korea the destination goal.
