Brit, 24, arrested for climbing 123-storey skyscraper in South Korea
A British daredevil has been detained by police today after he tried to climb the Lotte World Tower in South Korea.
The 24-year-old man, who has not been identified, was seen climbing the 123-storey skyscraper in the capital Seoul shortly after 10am local time. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and he did not appear to be wearing any safety gear.
Shocked locals recorded him from their bedrooms as he scaled the outside building.
Police and fire crews were called to the scene and they used a maintenance crane to reach the man and bring him down when he was on the 73rd floor. He was then taken into custody for questioning.
The suspect is reportedly a professional climber, and he has previously scaled other tall buildings, including the Shard in London. He is believed to have been inspired by Alain Robert, a French rock climber who is known as the 'French Spiderman' for his daring climbs of skyscrapers around the world.
Local media reported that the Brit could be charged with trespassing along with reckless endangerment.
The Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea, and it is one of the tallest buildings in the world. It is 555.7 meters (1,822 feet) tall, and it has 123 floors.
The tower is a popular tourist destination, and it offers stunning views of Seoul. However, it is also a popular target for climbers. In 2018, Alain Robert was arrested after he climbed the tower without any ropes.
The man's attempt to climb the Lotte World Tower is a reminder of the dangers of climbing tall buildings without any safety gear. It is also a reminder of the importance of security measures at these buildings.
