Broken Paddle and Swim - Gorilla (V+) Green River Narrows

Buy video

The video was recorded on the Green River Narrows in North Carolina. I was paddling in preparation for The Green Race, a world-famous extreme whitewater race that takes part the first Saturday of November. I paddled into "Gorilla" - a Class V+ rapid that is known, respected, loved, and feared around the world. My line through "Flying Squirrel" (the first double drop) went well, and I lined up for "The Notch" - a point where the river narrows to a four-foot wide slot between two cliff walls, drops off a few feet, and makes a 70 degree turn to the left amidst swirling, boiling water that, if you don't time your strokes right, will flip you to the left and spin you backwards. I came through the Notch nicely, and lined up for "The Pad" - a rolling launch-pad style waterfall a few feet downstream, and landed in "The Flume" - a narrow rock chute covered by less than a meter of fast-moving water. I think my paddle cracked during freefall after hitting the wall on the right after the pad. I got turned around in the "Speed Trap", a powerful hole/hydraulic at the bottom of the flume. I managed to ender out of the speed trap with half a paddle, rolled, ran the next rapid, rolled again, and slid down the next rapid on my ribs and was ripped out of my boat. Luckily no injuries, and I blew my whistle to signal to my friends that I needed help and they were able to get me a rope and get me out of the river. Thankfully we had a spare paddle and the rest of the day went off without a hitch.
