SOUNDBITE (English): MARIA GUSTAVA, Mozambique's ambassador to China
"Then when you arrive here, you find that is something that is not what you thought about. I thought that was everything from the historical way because that's what it has been portrayed. I've been to big cities. The lifestyle of people here and in Beijing, everything is the same. You have universities, you have schools, you have hospitals, and you have museums.
This is really admirable because Tibet is becoming modern. It's developing. It's attaching all the modern life, but it's still preserving its own identity, preserving its own traditions, and preserving its own ecology. This is a combination of modern life with the (culture).
They're creating better conditions. Nobody could even imagine that with all these mountains and high-altitude conditions, it can have bullet trains moving. So this really impressed me.
Even what's also remarkable is that you can still have the internet, 5G. No matter where you are, even if it's a rural area, it's very far away, you are connected.
And one thing that's very impressive is the high level of education. From what I heard, here, for 15 years, it's free education, which means the children can have access to their education.
Also, I want to highlight one thing that I think works very well, the model of how to combat poverty: cities are helping and they are working together. It's a model I didn't know about. Some developed cities are coming to Tibet and help.
They're doing well, because from what I could see, they have food, they have clothes, they have shelter, they have education, and also the health system.
I could see that all those people are very happy. I could see love on their face, in their eyes."
