"China's respect of human rights has a very high standard. It meets with the criteria that in the center of protection of human rights is the interest, the benefit, and the development of the human being."
Participants attending a human rights forum in Beijing shared their thoughts on China's advancement of human rights.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): AKMAL SAIDOV, First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan
"Chinese approach on global governance on human rights is more important. (It focuses on) economic, social, and cultural (rights), including the elimination of poverty, health care, education, and also fighting against corruption. And achievements of China in these fields are great. It's a good example and the best practice of China in the field of human rights, including social, economic and cultural rights."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): STEPHEN BRAWER, Chairman of the Belt and Road Institute in Sweden
"The question of eliminating poverty is tied to infrastructure development. If one does not have modern transport, electrification, clean water systems, these lay the foundation for human rights as a functioning viability. The success of China in lifting 800 million people out of poverty defines the foundation for global human rights, not only for China, but for the international community. To eliminate poverty is essential in order to recognize how you can go forward with human rights."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): ZOON AHMED KHAN, Research Fellow at Center for China & Globalization
"When we talk about human rights, we're not just talking about someone's right to protest or cast a vote. We are really talking about someone's right to live a better life. The conception that the West has sold to the world that you should do XYZ and human rights are about anyone's ability to disrupt the system. It doesn't sell anymore, it doesn't compute anymore. And unfortunately, their societies are suffering because of this notion, this ideology that they have tried to sell to other countries and people. Then you see China and people say wow 20, 30, 40 years ago, China was this and look at how far they've come. This is a society that is leading by example."
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): VERONIKA SARASWATI, Center for Strategic and International Studies China Study Unit Convenor, Indonesia
"The practice of Belt and Road Initiative basically is the real actions, concrete actions of the human rights itself. We cannot just say human rights without any content, without any actions. Just speaking, it's easy, but doing, implementing the real human rights is the most difficult part. China does its best to implement the real human rights."
SOUNDBITE 5 (English): ALDO ALVAREZ, Ambassador of El Salvador to China
"China's respect of human rights has a very high standard. It meets with the criteria that in the center of protection of human rights is the interest, the benefit, and the development of the human being."
