Wild elephant destroys fence at wildlife sanctuary in Thailand
A wild elephant destroyed a fence while walking through a wildlife sanctuary in Thailand.
The jumbo was walking along a dam at the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani province on June 14, when it encountered the fence blocking its path.
CCTV footage shows how the elephant made short work of the barrier, easily dismantling it using its powerful trunk. It then proceeded to cross to the other side.
Staff later repaired the fence to prevent any other elephants from escaping.
A sanctuary spokesman said: 'While there is an abundance of food available within the forest, the elephants might venture into community areas in search of jackfruit.'
The unruly elephant appeared a day after another jumbo was seen crossing the dam on June 13.
As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
