THIS HERO was praised by the internet after freeing a family of turtles that were trapped in a lethal 36-foot-long ghost net that had been lost or abandoned by fishermen.

The photographer caught amazing footage of himself freeing two 100-pound adult and two 35-pound juvenile Olive Ridley turtles, which are classified as, “vulnerable” with up-to 800,000 left in the wild.

Images and video captured the 36-foot-long tangled web of nets engulfing the turtles.

Freediver and Underwater Photographer Ibrahim Shafeeg (37) from the Maldives were able to cut open a ghost net and set a family of Olive Ridley turtles free into the South East Lagoon off Maafushi.

Ibrahim had gotten information from a local that there may have been turtles caught in a ghost net along the shallow shore of the ocean, and so he made his way out to try and find them and hopefully free them.

A ghost net is a fishing net that has been abandoned or lost in the ocean, which in this case had drifted close to the shore and had caught four turtles among waste found in the ocean.

When Ibrahim got to the scene, he discovered that two adult turtles and two juvenile turtles were caught and trapped in the large net that was around 36 feet in length.

At the time, Ibrahim was live streaming the event on his Instagram @the_sharkguy and had gained a multitude of interest from his followers and friends about the situation.

After letting his followers know the situation at hand and where he was, one of his local friends made their way there to help him free the turtles.

Together with his friend, Hussain Aiman (32) Ibrahim cut and chopped at the net with his knife, slowly freeing the tangled and confused turtles from the net.

Once Ibrahim had set each turtle free from the grasp of the net, he inspected the turtles for signs of damage from their ordeal, which thankfully seemed to leave them unharmed.

After inspection, Ibrahim released the grateful turtles back into the ocean, where they were free to live their lives which would have ultimately ended if they were still stuck in the net.

The video Ibrahim posted of saving the turtles gained a plethora of praise from commenters, including people thanking them for their efforts in saving the turtles and others calling them “heroes”.

“A ghost net had drifted inside the lagoon with four turtles tangled in it,” he said.

“I got information in the morning that there was a ghost net drifting in that location and there were turtles on it, so I went myself looking for it.

“I was just walking in the sea towards the location I was guessing that the net would be.

“From a distance I noticed the yellow buoy on the surface so I went towards it.”

Ghost nets are unfortunately not an uncommon sight in the Maldives, so Ibrahim was familiar with them as this was his fourth time seeing turtles caught in them.

“Ghost nets have been seen a lot in the Maldives and this is the fourth time I have been with ghost nets with turtles on them,” he said.

“It was huge with lots of different nets, ropes and lines.

“It was about 36 feet in length.

“It had drifted from the open sea and came through the reef of Maafushi.

“Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned or lost in the ocean.”

Once Ibrahim had started live-streaming the event, a local friend of his decided to go there and help him free the turtles from the net, which made freedom a lot faster for the turtles.

“I was making a live stream on my Instagram and some of my friends were asking about it and I told them that I am looking for a ghost net in that location,” he said.

“And when I saw the ghost net they came to my location to help me.

“I cut the ropes, nets, and fishing lines which were tangled on the turtles.”

After they had set the turtles free, Ibrahim dragged the net to the shore so it wouldn’t be able to catch any more innocent animals.

“We left the turtles free and dragged the net to the shore,” he said.

“I felt proud to help them.”
