A large Godzilla-like monitor lizard was caught on camera rampaging through a shop.

The 5ft-long reptile emerged from a canal and crossed a busy street in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 28.

It then made a beeline for the canvas store, ignoring a worker with a push cart out front.

CCTV footage shows the creature crawling towards the door of the property. It swiftly moved across the hallway, with a startled worker lifting his feet while sitting on a chair to avoid the creature.

Shop owner Yuttanan Klongpanichpakdi said: ‘It was just a regular day for us when the animal made it memorable. We often see that monitor lizard on the other side of the street where there is a canal.

‘We didn't think it would cross the street and enter. I don't know what it wanted, but we were all shocked. It was so big.'

The creature was later caught by animal rescuers and released back into the canal.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
