Thai Prime Minister candidate Pita Limjaroenrat receives warm welcome from supporters
Thai Prime Minister candidate Pita Limjaroenrat received a warm welcome from his supporters at a celebratory rally in northern Thailand on Thursday.
The politician and leader of the country's progressive Move Forward Party (MFP) arrived at the Hang Dong Market on June 15 to thank his followers for their votes.
MFP had won 7 of 10 electoral districts in the province.
Footage shows shrieking crowds of residents garbed in MFP's signature orange colour as they greeted the election frontrunner.
During his speech, Pita thanked the people of Hang Dong district, and everyone who supported the MFP in the May elections.
He assured the crowd that once the government was formed and he assumed office, he will diligently implement his proposed policies and development projects.
Pita vowed to delivering tangible results quickly to improve the quality of life for the people and the country.
After 30 minutes of speaking, Pita concluded the event by taking a group selfie with the enthusiastic crowd before departing from Hang Dong Market.
At around 5 PM, he joined the parade in Chiang Mai, which started from Tha Phae Gate and ended at San Sai Luang Municipality Public Park, where he delivered a speech during the nighttime event.
The progressive Move Forward Party led by Pita Limjaroenrat won the most seats in a national poll on May 15 with a pledge to reform the law that criminalises criticism of the Thai royal family. They have formed a coalition with exiled former Man City owner Thaksin Shinawatra and his group Pheu Thai, which is against reforms.
However, a junta cabal of 250 military-appointed unelected senators will now cast the deciding votes on which party can govern - rendering any elections a sham.
The ultra-conservative senators - branded 'dinosaurs' by critics - have pledged their loyalty to protecting the monarchy and vowed to prevent the Move Forward party from entering government due to its stance on modernising the state and watering down the Lese Majeste law, which they see as a threat to national security.
