STORYLINE:

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JEFFREY SHAW, Australian new media artist
"I've enjoyed every minute working in this context, and getting to know the media art community here in Hong Kong, and being part of their community, and being able to contribute to the community."

Jeffrey Shaw is the artist behind the "Virtual Versailles," an exhibition currently on display at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Shaw is an Australian new media artist whose works often offer interactive and immersive experiences.

In 2009, Shaw moved to Hong Kong and became the Dean of the School of Creative Media in the City University of Hong Kong.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JEFFREY SHAW, Australian new media artist
"I've been living for the last 12 years in Hong Kong. And as a consequence of that, I have the opportunity to engage and develop an appreciation and respect for Chinese culture. The other aspect is that living here also provides certain opportunities."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): JEFFREY SHAW, Australian new media artist
"Bringing a bicycle into play as an interface to explore the gardens of Versailles was a very logical choice. The curators of the exhibition had already shot the videos of journeys through the garden, various journeys, quite interesting journeys, because there were also paths which visitors don't normally take when they are visiting the garden. So, you could explore the gardens in very unusual ways."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): JEFFREY SHAW, Australian new media artist
"When we visit any space, we don't just look ahead. We are picking up different impressions. Our real-world experience is a kind of collage of impressions.
I would say one of the fundamental objectives of all my art practices is to somehow create a link between the imaginative spaces that I am creating, and one's sense of real-world experience, and to bring these two things together."

Looking to the future, Shaw aims to combine more AI-based technologies into his works.

SOUNDBITE 5 (English): JEFFREY SHAW, Australian new media artist
"I certainly look forward to exploring new strategies of working with AI in the artworks which I'm creating in the future, and in this environment, which is based on a project called "future cinema." The future cinema means the development of platforms and technologies which can provide us with new forms of cinematic experience in the future."
