STORYLINE:
As the scorching heat continues to torment various parts of India, the nation finds no respite from the intense heatwaves. The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) data showed the maximum temperature in some parts of the country at 42.2 Degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday, which was said to be 4.7 Degrees Celsius above normal.
The death toll in India's northern state Uttar Pradesh and its adjoining state Bihar due to the prevailing extreme heatwave conditions rose to 98 over the past three days, local officials said Sunday.
In Bihar, 44 people have died due to the hot weather. The state is grappling with the prevailing heatwave conditions, leading to a red alert warning as stated in the IMD's daily heatwave guidance released on Friday. In response, the Patna district administration has taken immediate action to prioritize the safety of students. They have extended the summer vacation for classes up to Class 12, ensuring that schools remain closed until June 24.
Additionally, other states have followed suit and extended their summer vacations as a proactive measure to protect the well-being of students. Schools in Goa, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh have implemented similar measures, allowing students to stay at home during this period of extreme heat.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert over the eastern and east-central parts of India for the next four days.
