STORYLINE:

In recent years, many Taiwan compatriots have chosen to work in the Chinese mainland amid its rural revitalization drive.

Tsai Gaohui, a designer, is one of them.

In 2020, she brought a team to Dongda Village in Putian City, east China's Fujian Province and started to tap into the cultural value of old buildings.

"The patterns on the wall are usually seen on door plates of ancient houses in the village, which are interesting and culturally rich. They can be the name card of the village in the future and we've registered them as trademarks."

Dongda Village is a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese, with many old houses of South Asian styles. Tsai said she was fascinated by the beautiful buildings the first time she entered the village.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): TSAI GAOHUI, Architectural designer from Taiwan
"All the patterns we designed originate from the buildings scattered in the village. We thought these patterns were exquisite, so we made them an IP. Dongda Lion, as a major symbol of the village, is derived from the lion patterns on the door heads of every building. Our team colored it brightly after the design. We hope that our team can show more villagers that these ancient dwellings can be utilized in this way and they have their own value. We hope that their rich cultural heritage can be displayed and showcased to the public in more ways."
