Heartwarming footage shows how a kind driver saved an injured cat left to die on the roadside - before he adopted the feline as a much-loved family pet.

Avery Basco was travelling with a friend when they spotted the black figure barely moving on the other lane in Pampanga province, the Philippines, on June 6. It had been hit by a car and looked to have its days numbered without urgent help.

When Avery realised it was a stray feline, he pulled over to check and placed it in a safe spot.

Footage shows the good Samaritan checking on the cat carrying it to a pile of grass to let it rest. He dashed to the shop for supplies and returned to retrieve the cat, which he carried home with him.

He said: ‘I hope more drivers will become alert and be prepared to stop for animals crossing the road. It's the right thing to do.'

The cat slept inside a cage and was allowed to wander around Avery's store. Slowly, the feline recovered until it could finally stand up and become lively again.

Avery added: ‘I am a cat lover. They are precious creatures that we share the city with. Let us all be kind.'
