Never give up: 78-year-old British man uses mobility scooter to keep sailing
A 78-year-old man from Sheerness, Isle of Sheppey, England, has come up with a novel solution for using his mobility scooter to get his sailing dinghy to the water.
Tim Bell, a retired electrician, found he no longer has the strength to pull his Scorpion class sailing dinghy up and over the substantial sea wall that surrounds Sheerness, so decided to see if he could tow it using a mobility scooter.
"He is old and so has some mobility and strength issues", James, the filmer of this video, told Newsflare. "He can walk short distances okay".
"He is well known in Sheerness for fundraising using two of his other mobility scooters. He is known to be inventive".
The footage shows the impressive pulling power of the vehicle as it's seen towing the sailboat up and down the steep ramps from the Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club's boat compound up behind the sea wall to the beach.
According to James, Mr. Bell is able to get in it and out of the boat by himself, but would usually go sailing at the local sailing club when there are other people around to assist with launching the boat.
"Also, the Scorpion dinghy is designed to be sailed by a crew of two people, but he does sometimes sail it on his own", said James.
