Massive landslide strikes mountain in southern China
A massive landslide struck a mountain in southern China.
Dramatic video filmed in Jinsha County in Guizhou Province on June 20 shows large chunks of rocks cascading down a mountain, the ground shaking and clouds of dust swirling.
The local villagers were taken aback but relieved as no casualties have been reported so far. Continuous rock falls had been occurring intermittently since August 2022, according to the locals.
A representative from the Anluo Township People's Government explained that the landslide was a geological disaster induced by local mining activities. The community living around the area had been evacuated last year, with preventative measures put in place.
Although minor collapses had occurred before, none were as severe as today's incident. Thankfully, due to the area being evacuated previously, there were no casualties.
The Jinsha County Natural Resources Bureau responded to the incident, stating that the landslide occurred within a demarcated hazard control management area. With an estimated 6000 cubic metres of rock having collapsed and multiple departments rushed to the scene.
The site is currently being managed, with work underway to further secure and assess the area.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
