Aged 10 Years on Sunbeds UK

By Shannine O’Neill

**EXCLUSIVE**

THIS NURSE was left horrified at the hidden sun damage caused to her face after using sunbeds for four years leaving her skin aged TEN years.

Aesthetic Nurse Anya Clements (22) from Cardiff, Wales discovered that she had severe skin damage from using sunbeds after using a skin analyser that looked at the underlying damage that you can’t see on the surface of the skin and she has discovered to her horror that she now has the face of a 32 year-old.

Anya was using sunbeds periodically for around four years, and at the height of her use before she quit for good she was doing ten-minute sessions, twice-a-week for six weeks straight.

In February 2023 however, Anya had the chance to use a skin analyser at her clinic and was shocked at the results.

The skin analysis recorded that for her age, she had severe sun damage to her skin because of not wearing appropriate SPF and not protecting herself accordingly from UV damage.

To use the skin analyser, you clean your face and make sure it is free of makeup or SPF and put your head under a hood where there is a camera to take a picture of your face in the dark after five seconds.

Skin analysers take an image of your face and analyse the underlying issues we cannot see with our skin, such as UV damage, sun spots, lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, age spots and uneven skin texture.

The photo is then given to the practitioners at the clinic and they are able to analyse what underlying damage has been done to your skin.

With this analysis, Anya was able to see the sun damage that had been done to her face, which made her immediately stop in her tracks with using sunbeds.

Although Anya was always aware of the effect that sunbeds can have on skin cancer, she was unaware of the toll the UV rays had taken on her skin at such a young age.

Anya had taken the analysis with her colleague, who at 50-years-of-age and practising for 13-years had never seen such severe sun damage on a 22-year-old.

The sun damage had left Anya’s skin aged by roughly ten years, but she has now dedicated herself to reversing the signs of ageing.

The analysis was a huge wake-up call for Anya, who now has taken a break from using sunbeds and has implemented a skincare routine centred around improving her skin damage, such as wearing high-quality SPFs and pharmaceutical products.

“In my clinic we have a skin analyser that takes photos of the under layers of the skin. What was uncovered was scary,” she said.

“For my age, I had severe sun damage from not wearing the appropriate spf and protecting myself from UV damage.

“My skin analysis was the thing that gave me the ‘reality check’.

“I was always cautious of the cancer risk which is why I would take breaks from the beds, however as I didn’t see any physical damage to my health, I would continue to go on them.

“As soon as I saw the skin results I stopped for good.”

Although Anya had posted her results to TikTok and gained over two-thousand likes, she still feels that people are unaware of the true damage sunbeds and not taking the proper precautions with UV rays can have on your skin.

“As a qualified nurse, I know in depth the risks to the sunbeds and I still chose to ignore them due to the fact that I didn’t see any noticeable damage,” she said.

“What happens underneath the skin and inside the body will not show any effects until the damage is done.

“It is very Important that more information about the risks, harm and symptoms are advertised so people can be made aware of the damages before it’s too late.

“My colleague who is 50 and has been in the industry for 13 years and had never seen sun damage so bad for my age.

“It was a big reality check to confirm that subbeds DO damage your skin without you seeing the physical effects.”

After seeing the damage sunbeds have done to her skin at such a young age, Anya has sworn off using them ever again.

“After seeing the damage made to my skin, I would never use the sun beds again,” she said.

“Not only for the increased risk of cancer, but for the severe damage it has created to my skin which would start to come through and show in the next ten to 15 years.

“Once that damage starts to come through, it is very hard to reverse.

“That’s why if people check their skin out sooner, they can use the appropriate products and care to protect them from any further damage.

“The skin analysis is a great tool to see what hidden damages you have. If done with a trained practitioner, you will clearly see where the damage is, what has caused it and how you can treat it.”

Anya has devoted her skincare regime to reversing the damage that has already been done by the sunbeds for the last six months, and has already seen a difference when she used the skin analyser again recently.

“I now check my skin every six months to see the improvement,” she said.

“I do things such as stay off the sun beds, wear spf every day (even in the winter) and implement a good skin care routine.

“This has helped my skin reverse the damage and get it healthier again. “
