Flames and smoke billow from restaurant after explosion kills 31 people in northwest China
A gas explosion occurred at a barbecue restaurant in northwestern China on Wednesday (June 21) at 20:40 local time, with a reported death toll of 31 people and seven others injured. Twenty fire rescue vehicles and 102 personnel were dispatched to the scene, according to local media.
The restaurant in the Xingqing District of Yinchuan City was a popular local eatery, known for its online popularity. The second floor of the restaurant housed private rooms with karaoke facilities, and at the time of the incident, multiple patrons were dining.
According to an eyewitness, approximately one hour before the incident, employees detected a gas leak and discovered a faulty valve on a liquefied gas cylinder. The barbecue restaurant supervisor left to purchase a replacement valve, and it was during the valve replacement process that the explosion occurred.
Many glass doors and windows of neighboring establishments were shattered. Currently, the streets surrounding the restaurant have been closed in both directions, and all businesses on the affected street have temporarily ceased operations.
The local public security department has reportedly taken legal action to detain nine individuals, including the restaurant's manager, shareholders, and staff, in connection with the Yinchuan barbecue restaurant explosion incident.
