STORYLINE:
Fiji held the 16th Chinese Bridge-Chinese Proficiency Competition for foreign secondary school students on Wednesday, with eight students from the Suva-based Yat Sen School participating in the annual event.
The competition, with the theme of "Fly High With Chinese", featured talent shows and speeches in Chinese at the auditorium of Yat Sen School, attracting an audience of hundreds of teachers, students and representatives of the local Chinese communities.
Samara Hughes, an 11 grader of Yat Sen School, got first place and will compete in the final contest on behalf of Fiji.
"I like singing Chinese songs, which inspires my love for learning Chinese," Hughes said, adding that she hopes to have the opportunity to study in China in the future so as to learn more about Chinese culture.
Wang Xuguang, a counselor at the Chinese embassy in Fiji, said, "Learning Chinese will surely give you a key to more possibilities in your future."
