Police have arrested a tenant who locked himself inside his bathroom during a drug-induced rampage in Thailand.

The unnamed male resident, 36, allegedly went berserk, screaming and scaring his neighbours before storming into his room at the apartment in Samut Prakan, Thailand, on June 21.

The man's relatives who lived nearby called the police fearing he might take someone hostage in his frenzied state.

Samrongnuea Police Station officers arrived at the building at around 12 noon and found the tenant's door locked.

They peered through the windows but found no one inside. They heard the sound of running water, and determined the man was hiding inside the bathroom.

Using a spare key from the man's family, officers barged into the room and tried to convince him to come with them, but he stubbornly refused and hurled threats at the police.

After around 20 minutes, the swarm of cops surrounded the bathroom cubicle and finally busted through the door, incapacitating the tenant with a taser gun.

They cuffed his hands and gave him first aid. He was then placed on a stretcher to be taken to a hospital.

Relatives said the man had been working as a motorcycle taxi driver, and had allegedly been struggling with drug addiction for a long time.

They pleaded with authorities to take the man to a rehabilitation centre so he could be treated.
