About 4,000 people gathered at the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow at midnight of Wednesday, as the country commemorated the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow.
June 22 marks the 82nd anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War.
Commemorations also took place in other parts of Moscow, as well as in many other cities such as St. Petersburg, Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don.
In 1941, German forces launched Operation Barbarossa, sweeping through expansive areas of the Soviet territory almost to the point of taking Moscow. They were finally stopped, suffering defeats over the winter.
