Mysterious green meteor lights up sky in southern China
A luminous, unidentified flying object emitting a brilliant green light, streaked across the night sky in southern China.
The video was filmed in the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province on June 22.
Zeng Yang, Vice President of the Sichuan Astronomical Science Popularization Association, said the object was highly likely to be a bolide.
Bodies from the solar system burn brightly when they enter the Earth's atmosphere. These fireballs are typically larger and faster than standard meteors, resulting in a more intense luminescence during their transit.
These meteors often take on a green hue, a common characteristic of bolides. This occurs when iron meteorites, containing the element magnesium, combust upon entering the Earth's atmosphere. If any parts of the meteor survive the descent and land on Earth, they are referred to as meteorites.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
