The first cheese market of this year took place on March 31 at Waagplein Square in Alkmaar. Every Friday until the last Friday in September, there will be a cheese market in the city.

Since the 16th century, cheese traders in Alkmaar have been united under the Cheese Guild, an organization dedicated to upholding the quality standards of the cheese industry.

In 1365, Alkmaar was granted the privilege of weighing and measuring the cheese, establishing a designated scale for this purpose.

The cheese carriers play a vital role in the market, transporting the sizable wheels of cheese on specially designed barrows. These sturdy barrows can bear an impressive load of up to 160 kilograms of cheese.

The traders can be recognized by their colored bands and straw hats. The merchant colors are red, yellow, green and blue. The cheese guild takes pride in their work and ensures that the cheese market is an unforgettable experience for all visitors.
