STORYLINE:

An American professor living in Xiamen City, southeast China's Fujian Province, has been writing books to record a changing and vibrant China for over 30 years.

William Brown is a 67-year-old MBA professor at Xiamen University. Having been interested in China for a long time, he sold his company and moved to Xiamen with his family in 1988.

"When I got to Xiamen, very quickly within more than 2 weeks, I saw that Xiamen is nothing like the media in the West portrayed it. And I found the people were very happy, friendly and excited. I was so blessed by their enthusiasm."

Brown traveled twice across China, in 1994 and 2019 respectively. And he was thrilled by the great changes that have taken place in the country.

"In 2019, I drove again the same route as 1994, 40,000 kilometers. And it was amazing the changes because in 1994 the government had this idea that if they build the infrastructure, that will help the Chinese lift themselves up and that worked. It worked because the Chinese really know how to grasp the opportunities and work hard. So China's changes really are a miracle. And I hope I'm writing these stories will help foreigners and Chinese better appreciate the whole country."

In the past 30 years, Brown has published over 30 books, sharing his views on China.

"I really admire the Chinese people, their patience and their persistence, but the thing I admire the most about the Chinese people is for emphasizing peaceful development. That is the most important thing."
