This is the nail-biting moment a car slid uncontrollably down a wet mountain road during a rainstorm in Thailand.

The white sedan had been driving on an uphill road in the Kathu district of Phuket when it suddenly stopped at a slippery S-shaped curve and began to back up on June 27.

Oncoming cars tried to avoid the out-of-control vehicle, which smashed into another approaching black sedan.

Police arrived at the incident and took both drivers to the police station for questioning.

Natthaphon Worasaksongsaeng, the driver of the black car, said the cops took his keys and were retrieving dashcam footage of the crash.

He said: 'The cops told me that the other driver was Indonesian operating a rental car, and that he was returning to his home country. I might have to pay for the damages myself because of that.'

He added that he was grateful he did not suffer major injuries.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
