Scientists in Denia, Spain, are caring for Alicante sea turtle (Caretta caretta) eggs after discovering a nest.

The endangered loggerhead sea turtle swam ashore in Denia, prompting experts from the Oceanographic Foundation to step in. The team took ultrasound readings, collected blood samples, and carefully retrieved 21 out of 111 eggs to be hatched in incubators. The remaining eggs were relocated to a protected beach.

Once hatched, the turtle hatchlings will be part of a project to increase their survival. The loggerhead sea turtle primarily nests in the eastern part of the Mediterranean.

Human activities and threats such as fishing gear and plastic endanger their existence, while light pollution and temperature variations affect their nesting habits and sex ratios.
