An ailing Thai elephant named Muthu Raja finds itself at the center of a diplomatic dispute between Thailand and Sri Lanka. Allegations of mistreatment and neglect at a Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka prompted Thai authorities to demand the return of the 29-year-old elephant, also known as Sak Surin. Suffering from abscesses and a stiff foreleg that hinders its mobility, Muthu Raja's condition requires specialized care.

After months of recuperation and healing under the custody of Sri Lanka's government, preparations are underway to transport the elephant back to Thailand. Training sessions to familiarize Muthu Raja with the conditions of a flight cage have been progressing well, with the elephant developing a positive rapport with Thai mahouts. On July 1, Muthu Raja will be transferred from the Dehlwala Zoo in Colombo to the airport, where it will be carefully loaded onto a transportation vessel for the journey home.

The return of the ailing elephant marks an important step in addressing its medical needs and ensuring its well-being. The complexities surrounding its journey reflect the sensitivity and significance placed on animal welfare and the ongoing diplomatic negotiations between the two nations.
