A woman was left with skin peeling off her face after she got a chemical peel in an attempt to remove her freckles.

Doone Roisin decided she wanted to get rid of her melasma freckles after finding them looking less “cute” and more like sun damage as she got older.

Melasma is a common skin condition, which occurs mostly in adults, in which brown or grey patches of pigment can develop anywhere on the face.

Doone, who runs a women’s media company called Female Startup Club, noticed hers were turning into dark spots and grouping together, causing discolouration.

Despite using sun cream and staying in the shade, she was unhappy with how they looked, so decided to try the drastic procedure.

“No matter how much I kept them protected from the sun, they kept getting darker and looking worse,” Doone, from Sydney, Australia, told NeedToKnow.co.uk.

“These last few years, I’ve done a few rounds of prescription skincare to reduce the effects of the sun spots, and it has kind of worked in the melasma areas.

“But then this year, I found out it could be possible to completely remove all your freckles.”

A friend had tried a chemical peel to remove her freckles, so Doone booked in with the same doctor to try it out, forking out $1,800 (£1,423).

She started with a dermamelan peel, which is often used to depigment the skin and reduce the appearance of spots.

Doone added: “The process started a few months before, as you need to spend weeks upon weeks prepping your skin.

“I had to change my skincare routine and went through with some laser treatments — then I was ready.”

In early May, Doone went to her appointment and had before pictures taken, as well as a ‘mask’ applied, which was like a brown cream.

She said: “The first cream they put all over your face essentially burns off all the top layers of your skin over the next 12 hours.

“You go home, carry on as normal, and then it starts to burn quite soon.

“Then 12 hours later, you wash it off.”

Doone was also sent home with a strict skin routine and a range of products to use over the next six months for the peel to work.

But she quickly started to suffer side effects.

She said: “My face felt very burnt, and by the second day, I was bright red.

“It looked like I had the worst sunburn of my life
"I was also very swollen.”

She continued the regimen, applying a cream twice a day to “burn off” the top layers of her skin.

Doone said: “My skin started to peel and it was so itchy, nearly impossible not to pick and peel at it.

“And because of all the creams you need to put on, I started to look a bit weird.

“The most peeling was in the first two weeks, and it has already made an improvement, but I have a few months left to go before I’m done.

“I’m also more used to it now, so I don’t have the feeling of burning or itching like I did in the beginning.”

The treatment included two weeks of “downtime”.

Despite the side effects, Doone insists she has no regrets now that her skin has recovered from the procedure, and she is thrilled with the results.

She said: “I have clear baby skin now.

“I’ve had freckles, sun spots, and dark melasma all my life.

“Having that all removed feels so good.

“I’ll admit it wasn’t the most pleasant, but I would totally do it over again.”

The treatment isn't something that lasts a lifetime – some people might only need to get it once in their life, but others may need to go back each year to get it done again.

Doone added: “It all depends on your skin and how the pigmentation comes back.

“I am super happy I did — it has got rid of the melasma freckles under my eye and the freckles on my lip that made me look like I had a moustache.”
