In a shocking incident, a major block of bridge was seen flowing away in the river as water level rose in central India's Chhattisgarh.

The incident took place at Sagni Ghat in Durg district on June 28.

The footage showes a major block of a bridge breaking down and flowing away with the water current as the water level rose in the Shivnath river.

The under-construction bridge worth Rs.16.40 crores (USD 1,998,594) was seen getting wasted due to poor construction that couldn't take the pressure of slight water rise in the river.

The area had witnessed continuous rain for four days and local residents, who had gone to the bridge to check the water level of the river below it, were standing very close to the structure when it collapsed.

This bridge connects the Silli and Nankatti villages.

D K Maheshwari, executive engineer of the bridges department, said the contractor, Amar Infrastructure, had been asked to dismantle the structure ahead of the monsoon season, but it failed to do so.

"These instructions are issued to all contractors ahead of the rainy season. Despite this, the contractor had not dismantled the structure at the Sagni Ghat bridge. Only the staging and shuttering have been washed away. No concrete had been poured," said Mr Maheshwari.

There are no reports of any injuries or casualties caused due to the incident.
