Motorcycles were crushed under a huge tree during a monsoon storm in the Philippines.

Fierce wind and rain struck the town of Guitnang Bayan in San Mateo, Rizal province, battering houses and uprooting a huge tree in front of the local police and fire stations on June 7.

Footage shows authorities sawing off the large trunk that had fallen and damaged four motorbikes at a carpark.

Richard Fiel, a jail guard at the San Mateo Municipal Jail, said: 'The affected motorcycles were being used by jail officers to go to and from work. The storm lasted for only a couple of minutes but it left the area with severe damage to properties.

'The incident was reported immediately to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of San Mateo and thereafter, the rescue took place.'

There were no reports of injuries or casualties.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
