STORYLINE:

The 20th "White Night" cultural event was held in Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Thursday night to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the "White City" in Tel Aviv being recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

The "White City", Tel Aviv, is known for its unusual collection of white, unadorned, balconied Bauhaus buildings, winning UNESCO recognition in 2003 as a World Heritage site.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SHIRA LEVY BENYEMINI, CEO & Artistic Director Liebling Haus, The White City Center in Tel Aviv
"The White City is a place that has a collection of international style building, a very unique architecture that brought here during the 1930s, from Europe, by Jewish architects, in order to create a new society in Tel Aviv. This style is very unique, because it was adapted to the culture and to the climate of the Middle East. And it's based on very unique functional principles of the modernism. And the White City is also based on a garden city plan, which is the second layer why it's so important. And during 2003, UNESCO declared the White City as a very famous and great heritage site for the world."

German architects trained in the Bauhaus style immigrated to Tel Aviv and designed more than 4,000 buildings in the Bauhaus look.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SHIRA LEVY BENYEMINI, CEO & Artistic Director Liebling Haus, The White City Center in Tel Aviv
"The Bauhaus was a school of architecture and design that Jewish architects studied there and brought the ideas from the Bauhaus there to Tel Aviv. Bauhaus became a brand of school, because it brought many ideas of a new way of thinking, how to build an affordable way for people that come to the city and want to live in houses, how to make it very useful. And they wanted to have more industrial way of housing and less something that will be more specific for rich people."
