STORYLINE:
Despite the ongoing conflict and economic turmoil in Yemen, some families are finding solace in a visit to the sole zoo located in the south of the capital, Sanaa.
Thousands of people have flocked to the zoo during the holiday of Eid al-Adha, which is one of the most important holidays for Muslims across the world. The festivities provide a rare opportunity for loved ones to gather and cherish moments of joy together.
Many Sanaa residents brought their children to experience the wonders of nature's creatures, from majestic lions and tigers to gentle deer, birds, ducks, and peacocks.
The Eid holiday becomes a celebration of the children's innocence and happiness, a stark contrast to the harsh realities of the conflict-stricken nation.
Amid the ravages of war and limited access to once-popular tourist areas, public gardens, and parks, including the zoo, have become sanctuaries for the weary population seeking respite and entertainment. As one of the few places of leisure left standing, the zoo becomes a beacon of hope, drawing in visitors during the holidays and vacations.
Fouad al-Harsh, the dedicated manager of the zoo, shares the struggles endured due to the war and blockade. Food prices for the animals have soared, and there has been a severe fuel crisis. However, with the crisis easing, the zoo's operation has improved, providing a sense of relief and optimism for its furry inhabitants and visitors alike.
Established in 1999, the zoo boasts an impressive collection of over 1,600 animals, ranging from lions to Arabian Yemeni leopards and a variety of wolves, ostriches, hyenas, crocodiles, monkeys, and more.
The attraction has witnessed a surge in attendance this year, doubling the number of visitors as Yemenis hold on to the hope of diplomatic breakthroughs and dreams of a lasting peace and economic revival.
