Hindu pilgrimage to a holy cave high in the snow-capped mountains of Indian-administered Kashmir as an example of communal harmony in the Muslim-majority region.

Amarnath Cave, covered by snow almost all year round, contains an ice stalagmite that is considered a physical manifestation of Lord Shiva, a Hindu god.

Thousands of Kashmiris work to clear the path of the pilgrimage, thousands more rent out ponies and palanquins to the pilgrims, and tents for them to sleep in.

Locals say they long for the yatra to commence as it generates opportunities and gives them a chance to serve people, something they link with 'shabab' (blessing).

The porters, guides, pony owners, taxi drivers and hoteliers would wait for the whole year for the tourists and pilgrims to arrive as it is a good source of income. This pilgrimage would give a chance to the pilgrim to look inside his own self and do some soul searching. Besides the religious aspect, the Amarnath trek provides a much-needed relief from the hectic city life and brings one closer to nature, thus opening the realm of the spiritual world.

Situated at an altitude of 3,888 m, the Amarnath cave is considered as one of the holiest shrines for Hindus. The Yatra takes place from the traditional 36-km Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
