An investigation has been launched to determine if hazardous materials stored in a hangar at Newquay Airport in Cornwall, southwest England, posed a potential danger to US President Joe Biden during his recent visit to the UK for the G7 Summit in June 2021.

The presidential jets were parked close to a large hangar at Cornwall Aerohub adjacent to Newquay Cornwall Airport. The huge hangar contains some 450 tonnes of volatile material, according to Newsflare's filmer, a local video journalist.

The UK Civil Aircraft Authority reveal that their "whistle blowing" unit was informed that President Joe Biden and his entourage were exposed to risk during the G7 stopover in Cornwall in 2021.

The story unravelled when planning application was submitted by Car finishing product manufacturers Holt Lloyd International Ltd, the tenants. The application is to store 450 tonnes of volatile substance intended for global distribution a few hundred yards from a busy civil airport runway. Holt Lloyd Ltd have operated quite legally and safely at the Aerohub since 2012.

As the area is designated an Enterprise Zone it is usual for Development Orders in such areas to be granted for business projects without the need for potentially problematic public scrutiny inevitable with public consultation. Enterprise Zone.

Development is all about action rather than procrastination. The submission of a planning application in this case would seem to be a wish by Holt Lloyd to "regularise" the prior consent and create firmer legal footing to carry on the business.

Interestingly, it is within the power of Cornwall Council planning officers to pass judgement on applications without recourse to involvement of elected officials or committees, if no objections are received. Objections have now been logged. We also have now attention from the Health and Safety Executive, the MOD, The CAA and the local parish council. Rather awkwardly Cornwall Council receives rent from The Enterprise zone but also has to approve the legal and safety aspects before granting planning permission to the tenant.

New tenants at the Aerohub are a Canadian company named Space Engine Systems who state they are to test newly developed rocket propulsion systems at the site. An exciting mix of business at the locale. The Airport is now regulated under EU law 139/2014, this law is now incorporated into UK law after Brexit. The regulation tasks Airport managers with wide range of safety procedures and protocols relating to "Aerodromes" with special attention to fire risks. Airport managers are legally obliged to address the potentially explosive stores in the airport hangar and construct adequate plans to deal with accidents. Airline pilots should be warned of the risk factor. And a full risk assessment should be published.

In 2016 in Pocklington East Yorkshire an Aerosol manufacturing plant LMA Chemicals situated adjacent to Pocklington Airfield witnessed explosions and a large fire completely destroying the plant. The Holt Lloyd Ltd planning application will be heard in early August 2023.
