Rescuers working for an animal welfare NGO were able to haul a large cow to safety after it had fallen into what locals said was a 70ft-deep well.

Video shows a brave worker from NGO Atalkamdhenusdl, based in Shahdol district in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, descending into the well and tying a rope around the cow. They were able to pull the animal out by tying rope around it and then using a JCB digger.

Gaurav from Atalkamdhenusdl said: "After we went there we found that the cow is looking very tired. We immediately arranged a JCB and one of our members went down into the well to tie the cow with rope."

On their Instagram, Atalkamdhenusdl describe themselves as providing "rescue shelter services for injured and destitute cattle, dogs and all animals."

One online commenter said in response to the rescue video: "Brought tears in my eyes. True representatives of God on this planet."
