A motorcycle rider stopped and picked up an injured monitor lizard lying on the road.

Nattapong Dilokchokthanan was travelling on his two-wheeler when he saw a barely moving reptile blocking the path in Samut Prakan province, Thailand on May 21.

Instead of turning a blind eye, the busy motorbike taxi rider pulled over and helped take the creature to safety.

Footage shows Nattapong approaching the animal and pulling it on its tail to take it on the roadside where it would not be hit by oncoming cars. He then reported the animal sighting to wildlife rescuers.

He said: ‘I don't know why the lizard was on the road but it looked like it was hurt. Maybe it wandered into the middle and was hit and run by a car.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
