A huge tornado descended from the sky before damaging homes during a storm in the Philippines.

Footage shows the tornado's terrifying funnel twisting down from gray clouds overhead as thunder boomed in the town of Milaor in Camarines Sur province on July 2.

Worried residents watched while the air column slowly touched down on a field.

Local authorities said at least three wooden houses were damaged during the tornado's onslaught.

Barangay Dalipay chairman Romeo Rodriguez told reporters that the local government is providing financial assistance while the homes were being repaired.

A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that connects the earth and a storm cloud. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the rise of warm, humid air and the fall of cooler air inside a thunderstorm create spinning currents that condense into a visible whirling funnel.

Tornadoes spawned from supercell thunderstorms are the most common, and often the most damaging.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
