Filmed on 29 June 2023, this video features six new black-tailed prairie dog young born at Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo.

The adorable little ones surprised visitors as they explored their enclosure, having been carried by their mother for a month before being born in an underground burrow. Despite their youth, they are already consuming greens and playfully frolic around the zoo, keeping their colony occupied.

The species has suffered population decline due to habitat destruction, with only about two percent of their original range remaining.

Often mistaken for marmots or ground squirrels, these prairie dogs are named for their barking sounds, which serve as a warning to predators.
