STORYLINE:

The Arab League permanent members held on Tuesday an emergency meeting in the Egyptian capital of Cairo to discuss the escalating situation in Jenin.

The Arab League issued a stern warning to Israel regarding the consequences of its continuous military offensive. They emphasized that the ongoing attack not only poses a serious threat to regional security and stability, but also undermines efforts to revive the peace process in the Middle East.

During the meeting, the Arab League Council condemned the Israeli operation in Jenin as a blatant violation of international law. The council expressed serious concerns about the negative impact of the military offensive on the prospects of achieving peace and stability in the region.

"In a blatant violation of both international law and international legitimacy, the Israeli occupation authorities add a new mistake alongside other several accumulated mistakes; it is a new crime that shed the Palestinian blood again, which has dire consequences that threaten security and stability by entering unaccountably into the cycle of violence, in which everyone loses, including the Israeli people themselves."

At least 10 Palestinians have been killed in the Jenin refugee camp and thousands fled their homes as Israel pressed ahead on Tuesday with its largest military campaign in the occupied West Bank since 2002.

The Israeli army said in a statement that it launched an "extensive counterterrorism effort in the area of Jenin city and the Jenin Camp" and carried out airstrikes on "terrorist infrastructure."
