A cheeky stray dog delayed flights when it wandered onto an airport runway in Thailand.

The pooch caused travel chaos for passengers when it was seen scampering across the tarmac at the Trang Airport in Trang province shortly at 11 am on July 1.

Thai Lion Air flight SL825 bound for Bangkok was held up while ground staff chased the wayward mutt in a jeep. They eventually scooped up the pooch and carried it back into the terminal.

Airport staff blamed holes in the four-miles long fence surrounding the runway. They said they have repaired the baps and placed barbed wires under the fence to keep the strays from digging underneath.

Trang Airport said: 'Trang Airport will do whatever it takes to resolve such issues and provide the airport area with maximum security.'

Officials said the dog had also emerged on the runway two days earlier. Thai Lion Air flight SL824 was arriving from the Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok, but had to be diverted to Krabi Airport because of the stray.

A second attempt at landing was met with weather turbulence, forcing the plane to once again turn back to Krabi.

The flight finally touched down at Trang Airport at 2 pm, with disgruntled passengers slamming Trang Airport management for the delays.

Both incidents have sparked concern among travellers, who demanded better security measures from the airport.

The airport said construction to expand the airport was ongoing and paths that have temporarily opened for heavy vehicles may have allowed the dogs to get in.

Construction workers were urged to catch any dogs they might see approaching the airport premises, they said.
