A family home was washed away by monsoon floods, killing one person with the two other missing relatives being rescued in Indonesia today.

The wooden property next to a river bridge was battered by the muddy torrents following heavy rain in South Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, in South Sumatra Province, on July 5.

The two survivors were Karno, 60, and Toyib, 30, who were pulled from the river further downstream. Sarmi, 50, was found dead having drowned in the raging flash flood.

Head of the Reconstruction Section of the OKU Selatan Regional Disaster Management Agency, Heri, said: ‘When the house collapsed, there were three occupants inside. They were all carried away by the flood along with their house.'

Head of Emergency Division BPBD South Sumatra Ansori said the three victims stayed in the house during the flash flood.

He added: ‘The river overflowed and the flood was too strong for them to leave. But unfortunately, it dragged their property away.'

The flood also damaged several other bridges and washed away two other houses in the region. Officials said 55 homes were affected along with 125 residents.
