'It's the colour of a highlighter pen!' River in Japan turns bright green, shocking residents
The Tatsuta River in south-central Japan turned bright green on Wednesday morning, July 5.
After a water quality test by officials at Nara Prefecture, it was found that the river was not toxic. Authorities still asked residents not to touch the water or use it for agricultural purposes until further notice.
Video filmed at the Tatsuta River in Ikoma, Nara Prefecture at 11am on Wednesday shows the bright green river. A woman is heard saying in Japanese: "Wow, it's the colour of a highlighter [pen]!"
A further investigation also found red substances on fences along the nearby Mochi River that flows into the Tatsuta River. When the substance came in contact with water, the water turned green.
