A cheeky wild macaque entered a market and gorged on stallholders' fruits in Thailand.

The large male monkey was spotted by shoppers leisurely munching on fresh produce at the Ang Thong Market in Ang Thong province on July 4.

Unfazed by the curious stares of passers-by, the hungry primate carried on devouring its meal - which it plucked from a grocer's stall - before taking a stroll around the market. Sated from lunch, it then climbed up a building to take a siesta.

Vendors said the monkey may have been separated from its troop and hitched a ride on a delivery truck from a neighbouring province. They said the animal may have chosen to stay at the market, where there was a constant food source and no competition from other macaques.

Authorities later drove the animal away from the marketplace. They said it was not the first time the monkey had ventured there and stolen fruits from locals.
